Introduction
The Watchers were part of a secret council. Their job then, and even now, was to monitor the slayers and train them in their role of protecting humans. They are generally proficient in magic as well as having hand to hand combat skills - though their combat skills are no where near as strong as a slayers. Normally they are there as back up.

Role
A Watchers role is to train and assist a Slayer, and prepare the Slayer to face the perils of the creatures of the night they'll have to face. Often they act as back up when needed, or a source of information. Finally they are expected to chronicle every aspect of their Slayers life to enable the council to understand more. They are no longer expected to keep the council as quiet however.

The council
Originally the Watchers Council was a secret body that didn't let anyone know of its existence, or its location. It worked alone often ignoring any boundaries in its way including regional and international borders. There were a trio that worked undercover to deal with any situations the watchers council needed to keep quite. Now though things have changed.
The Modern Watchers Council is more open, and is led by Giles. They're currently trying to regroup and regain numbers. New Watchers are being trained already to link to slayers.

Powers
A Watcher normally has some form of magical power at their command. Many are alchemists, and quite a few study Demonolgy (though they focus on the Vampire as their main study). This means that they can be useful as a magic user as well as their more limited hand to hand combat skills.
